Launch: New OONI Probe Desktop App for Windows and macOS
If you’re a user of the OONI Probe desktop application, you might have felt it was lacking a bit of love. It works fine, but it was lacking some features and UI improvements already available on its mobile counterpart. Well we’ve got good news, a new version of the OONI Probe desktop app is now available for Windows and macOS. And you can expect more frequent updates going forward.
Get the new OONI Probe Desktop App.
If you already have the old app installed, and it hasn’t auto-updated yet, you can open it to ensure you get the latest version. The new version starts at version 6.0.1.
What is OONI Probe?
OONI Probe is a free and open source tool that we have built since 2012, designed to measure various forms of internet censorship. To enable communities worldwide to run OONI Probe and contribute measurements (which are published as open data in real-time), we have made OONI Probe available for both mobile and desktop platforms. Specifically, OONI Probe is available for Android, F-Droid, iOS, Windows and macOS.
What are the new features of the new desktop app?
- New dashboard screen with stats about your measurement results
- New “OONI News” section with the latest censorship reports and announcements
- Support for OONI Run links
- More control of what tests to run and when
- Ability to filter results for better understanding
- Proxy settings if you’re struggling to reach the OONI servers
- More languages supported: Bosnian, Burmese, Finish, Japanese, Khmer, Portuguese (Portugal) and Vietnamese
This update stems from our effort to improve the long-term sustainability of the OONI Probe apps, through a single multiplatform app for both Mobile and Desktop, something we shared before here. We thank the Open Technology Fund (OTF) for supporting this work.
